Bill's passion is her business:  Beach Cottage Photography

In outdoor enthusiast, Barbara Marie Kraus currently lives on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Bicycling, hiking and kayaking are among her favorite activities and they provide plenty of opportunity to for her to photograph the beaches, salt marshes and river estuaries of Coastal Georgia. She specializes in landscape and nature photography that highlight the uniqueness of the coast.

Originally from the West coast, Barbara Marie Kraus studied textile and interior design in San Francisco before moving to the Golden Isles in 1994.  Her love of the photographic medium started when she was a teenager and has been a constant companion through the years.  With the advent of computer driven graphics she has extended her talents into the digital realm and enjoys the myriad manipulative possibilities available with modern graphics computer programs.

Kraus’ studies in interior design prompted an interest in the human landscape. Her fascination with the panorama of human life has led her to examine both the good and the bad in modern society and she finds that “a study of the background against which people move through their lives can often provide us with a glimpse into their hearts and souls”.

A collector of antique linens and embroideries, pattern and texture are another theme often found in Kraus’ work.  Her use of Notan (a Japanese word that means “lightness-darkness”) is evident in both her black and white, and color work.  “It’s the ability to see things in terms of light and dark and their relationship in a composition” she says.  “It is a wonderful way to emphasize the patterns and textures in the world around us”.

Her urban photography and images of nature are available in a collection of fine art prints and photography cards on this website. Her stock photos can be purchased from
